Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour

emirates-tour-logoAs part of Great Lakes FM’s 30th birthday celebrations, the Emirates Melbourne Cup visited Great Lakes FM studio on 16th July 2016 at 8:30am. The Emirates Melbourne Cup tours Australia and New Zealand in the lead up to the “event that stops a nation”. Forster-Tuncurry was one of five lucky New South Wales destinations in the 2016 tour and Great Lakes FM was excited to welcome it here.

Whilst here, the Emirates Melbourne Cup travelled in a convertible vintage car down Manning Street, Tuncurry, over the Forster-Tuncurry Bridge and then down Wharf Street, Forster. It stopped at iconic venues (John Wright Park and Main Beach) so that the public could see and photograph the cup, and finished with a ride in a beautiful horse-drawn carriage down the Tuncurry Racetrack, where it stayed during the Ladies Day Race Meeting.

Each year, the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour provides rural, regional and metropolitan communities across Australia and New Zealand with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the Emirates Melbourne Cup firsthand.

The annual Tour celebrates the heroes and stories intrinsically linked to the Melbourne Cup and its contribution to Australia’s historical and cultural heritage before returning to Flemington Racecourse for the “race that stops a nation” on the first Tuesday in November.

Since the Tour began in 2003, the Melbourne Cup has travelled more than 456,000 kilometres, engaging tens of thousands of people.

In 2016 the $175,000 trophy toured 34 destinations across Australia and New Zealand in an effort to unite communities by engaging schools, councils, hospitals, aged-care facilities and racing clubs in events to raise funds for local causes.

101.5 Great Lakes FM and Tuncurry-Forster Jockey Club united in a bid to host this event in Forster-Tuncurry and were excited when their bid was successful. This was a unique opportunity for this “icon” of Australian and world sport to visit and showcase our area and raise funds for local charity, Riding For The Disabled.

The tour started with an official welcome for Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour delegates at the Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club on Friday, 15th July at 7:30pm. Saturday 16 July was a full programme of events, commencing at the 101.5 Great Lakes FM studios in Tuncurry, followed by a parade from Tuncurry to Forster, including stops at iconic locations in Forster and Tuncurry so that members of the public could view the cup and have photo opportunities, morning tea at Evermore Retirement Living and a visit to Sunrise Supported Living before finishing at Tuncurry Racecourse to coincide with the annual Tuncurry-Forster Jockey Clubs annual Ladies Race Day.

Local businesses had the opportunity to “don a racing theme” to welcome the Cup delegation, and Forster and Tuncurry were decorated with flags, posters and programmes to welcome the Emirates Melbourne Cup delegation. During the two day event funds were raised from the sale of flags, show bags and the opportunity to have a photo with the cup.  Over $6,000 was raised for Riding for the Disabled.

Throughout the event 101.5 Great Lakes FM provided exclusive radio coverage of the event as part of the station’s 30th Anniversary celebrations including interviews with key stakeholders, programme details and live crosses on the day.

The event was very successful and photos of the event can be seen in the Gallery.
