About us
Licence Area
The Great Lakes Council area is located on the eastern seaboard between Port Stephens in the south, Hallidays Point in the north and the foothills of the Great Dividing Range to the west.

The Council area is 3,373km² in area, comprising both coastal and forested rural hinterland. It is 85km at its widest point, 62km north to south, and has a total coastline of 145km.

Forster is the largest town in the Council area and is 320km north of Sydney and 168km north of Newcastle.

One third of the total Council area is made up of national parks (34,000 hectares) and state forests (76,770 hectares). The combination of 2 national parks, 7 state forests, mountain ranges, rolling hills and valleys, a triple lake system, numerous rivers and 27 beaches has turned the Great Lakes into a major recreational area.

Because of these geographic features, several distinct communities have developed in the Council area, the main ones being Forster/Tuncurry, Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens, Bulahdelah, Stroud, Nabiac, Green Point, Pacific Palms, Smith's Lake, Coomba Park and North Arm Cove. Great Lakes FM broadcasts to all of these communities.
